Colombia - Juan Martin - Red Bourbon - Washed Process
Heritage coffee varietals like Red Bourbon have a distinct advantage on the cupping table. Because they’re not hybridised with robusta, the potential for clarity and structure is incredibly high. When producers are able to unlock that potential, the coffees they produce are some of the best in the world.
Normally, when we’re lucky enough to buy two coffees from the same producer - and one of them is a Geisha - the Geisha tastes better and costs more. So we were a little surprised to find that this year’s Red Bourbon from Juan Martin not only outperformed the Geisha on the table, it was also more expensive. Even more surprising when you consider that last year’s Geisha from Juan Martin was one of the best coffees we drank all year.
We were blown away - and put the order in with Café Imports straight away.
This Red Bourbon, from the eminent Banexport, reminded us why we love this varietal so much: excellent fruit character, bright, crisp acidity, and complex brown sugar notes that completely floored us.
It’s a real pleasure to be able to share a coffee this good.
