Kenya - Kibugu Coffee Farmers Co-op - Gicherori AA - Washed Process
So many of the washing stations around Kibugu have become household names amongst specialty coffee buyers; Kii, Kathangariri, Gatitu and of course Gicherori. I could list a tonne of coffees we've bought and loved from this region, on the South Western side of Mount Kenya.
The Kibugu FCS owns the Gicherori factory and four others; Kathkwa, Ndunduri, Gikirima, and Ngerwe. Astute Josie heads will recognise Ndunduri from our previous offerings. This pocket of the Kenyan coffee producing regions has tonnes going for it, in no small part the abundance of SL varietal trees which really helps to elevate the cup quality. The Co-op has 1200 members across those sites and producers bring coffee to the mills for processing. The co-op provides financing, training and agronomy for it's members.
This year, we chose the AA lot from Gicherori which we purchased through Café Imports. It stood out for it's intense fruitiness and jammy acidity, and it's complex sugariness which blew us away on the cupping table. A reminder of why Kenyan coffee on the whole has such an incredible reputation.
