Burundi - Mikuba Hill - Heza Washing Station - Washed Process
It's been a while since we last had a coffee from Burundi in our offering. This year we went on the hunt for excellent coffees that aren't from Colombia/Ethiopia and this lot from Long Miles fit the bill.
We were really impressed by the coffee's bright, white floral aroma which led into a peachy kind of fruit in the cup. Certainly a coffee that could hold up on any table. It has a bundle of caramel flavour which rounds out the experience and gives balance and weight to the coffee.
Long Miles Coffee owns a number of washing stations in Burundi and smallholders bring their coffee to the stations as a means of centralisation. There the coffee is processed for export and Long Miles negotiates getting the coffee to a port, which is particularly hard in landlocked Burundi. Their lots are separated into seperate "hills" which act as the communal identity for growers.
This lot is from Mikuba which is just to the North East of the Heza mill. Farmers here interplant coffee with banana for shade and deliver the cherry to the station using the "farmer card" system that Long Miles have built. This allows for traceability for all deliveries and selection of lots based on quality scores.
