Last year, on our trip to Brisbane for a popup at Supernumerary, we had the chance to hop around a few cafés. The absolute highlight was a coffee from Guatemala, that Café Imports had sourced. As soon as we tasted it, I called our rep (KC) and tried to get hold of some. And whilst that lot was out of stock for the year, we were promised the most similar lot available for this years harvest.
This lot from Finca El Matasono, one of Samuel Barrios' two farms is incredible. It totally fits the bill and delivers incredible quality and great Central American character. Frequently, single origin lots from Guatemala are nutty and slightly under ripe tasting. Often this get characterised as "chocolatey" or "hazelnut", but there are coffees from Guatemala that are full of rich fruit character and sweetness. We loved the stone fruit profile of this cup and the roundness of the brown sugar finish.
Enjoy, and thanks KC!
